Pro-Skate Demo at School

April 22nd, 2009

Today a much anticipated pro-skate demo event took place after school from 4pm-5pm at the YIS skatepark on the playground. Sunny skies and summer-like temperatures ushered in a handful of local pro-skaters along with Arai-san from Hemisphere Skate Shop in Motomachi. The event was organized by the board club to raise awareness for Earth Day.

The event began with a free form jam session with Shun, Saho, Gene, and Arai-san skating along with members of the board club. As the pros grew accustomed to the layout of our park and warmed up, the intensity increased and tricks our park has never seen before started to flow.

The day culminated in a round of S-K-A-T-E with Kimi, Kaden, Jonah, and Bernardo representing the school along with Shun and Saho. The elementary boys did a fantastic job with Kaden upping the ante by launching over one of the 1/4 pipes before getting eliminated. In the final three Kimi went head to head with Shun and Saho but in the end Shun was in best form.

For everyone involved, it was a fantastic way to spend a weekday afternoon. Special thanks to Kimi and Taylor for your work putting it together.

Here is a video of SKATE played today. Special thanks to Brian Lockwood for shooting the event.

A Day Among Tigers

April 19th, 2009

Yesterday we heard from Alex and Susie that the Hanshin Tigers were playing the Bay Stars this weekend. Asako’s Dad has been a Hanshin fan since he was a little boy so we quickly called him to see if he was free today. Not only was he free but Asako’s mom was away this weekend so he was looking for stuff to do. “Perfect”, we thought so we went to buy tickets.

Only with Hanshin would the away team sell-out over the home team so we sat in the Bay Stars section and I found myself cheering for the home team in part because they were the underdogs and because there were plenty of Tigers fans around us (it seems we weren’t the only ones blocked out from the Hanshin side). Asako’s dad is a great sport and was happy to sit wherever.

Yesterday the  Tigers won but today it was the Bay Stars turn to get in front and keep their lead. There were a few close innings with men on base (even loaded) at one point for the Tigers but they didn’t connect when the time was right and the local boys came out 4-2 with a win.

It did make for a good day out with Ojichama, Asako, the kids, and some serious sun. If anyone doubts whether summer is here or not, today was proof  that it has arrived or is moments away.
